Have the Conversation You Have Been Avoiding.

The Conversation That Gets Avoided

Every business owner has a conversation they have been putting off.

Maybe it is a conversation with a partner about the direction of the business. Maybe it is a conversation with a key employee about performance or role clarity. Maybe it is a conversation with your accountant about whether your current structure is still serving you.

Maybe it is a conversation with yourself about whether the business you are building is actually the business you want.

Why Avoidance Is Expensive

Twenty years of working with business owners has taught us that the conversations that get avoided are almost always the ones that matter most.

They get avoided because they are uncomfortable, because they require honesty, or because they might lead to a decision that feels difficult. But the cost of avoidance is almost always higher than the cost of the conversation.

The partner misalignment that goes unaddressed becomes a business fracture. The performance issue that goes unspoken becomes a culture problem. The structural question that goes unasked becomes a tax liability. The personal question that goes unexamined becomes a decade of building the wrong thing.

What Makes a Conversation Productive

The conversations that move businesses forward share a few characteristics. They are honest — not diplomatic to the point of being useless. They are specific — not vague enough to avoid accountability. And they are followed by action.

A conversation that ends with “we should think about that“ is not a productive conversation. A conversation that ends with a clear decision, a clear owner, and a clear timeline is.

The discipline is not in having the conversation. It is in having it in a way that produces something.

One Thing to Do This Month

This month, identify the one conversation you have been putting off. Then have it.

Not a version of it that is comfortable enough to avoid the real issue. The actual conversation — the one where you say the thing that needs to be said, ask the question that needs to be asked, or make the decision that needs to be made.

That is where the work begins. That is where the business moves forward.
