The Dominion Mind Brief
October 2026
Year-End Tax Planning Starts Now.
The Window Is Narrowing
October is the month when year-end tax planning shifts from optional to urgent. The decisions you make between now and December 31 will determine your tax position for the entire year — and many of the most effective strategies require action before the year closes.
By November, some options are already off the table. By December, the window narrows further. The owners who finish the year in the strongest tax position are the ones who start planning now.
Key Areas for Business Owners
For business owners, the key areas to examine now are your entity structure and whether it is still optimized for your current income level; your retirement contributions and whether you have maximized the available deductions; and your equipment and capital purchases and whether accelerated depreciation makes sense this year.
Also worth examining: your accounts receivable and payable timing and whether deferring income or accelerating deductions is advantageous; and your estimated tax payments and whether you are on track to avoid underpayment penalties.
Each of these decisions interacts with the others. The most effective year-end planning looks at them together, not in isolation.
Key Areas for Individuals
For individuals, the focus shifts to capital gains harvesting — reviewing your investment portfolio for positions that can be sold to offset gains or generate losses before year-end.
Charitable giving strategies deserve attention now: qualified charitable distributions from IRAs, donor-advised fund contributions, and bunching strategies can all reduce taxable income meaningfully.
Roth conversion opportunities are also worth evaluating before year-end, particularly if your income this year is lower than expected or if tax rates are likely to rise in future years.
The Cost of Waiting
The most common tax planning mistake is not making a bad decision — it is making no decision until it is too late to make a good one.
Strategies that could have saved thousands of dollars in October become unavailable in January. The discipline of year-end planning is not complexity. It is timing.
If you have not had a year-end planning conversation yet, now is the time. The window is open. It will not stay open.
